daydreamers, a UK based Synth-Pop band, have released yet another banger. Since signing with Sony, they’ve been steadily building a following and have now released their latest single “Colourblind” which has already achieved over 55,000 streams on Spotify.

When you press play on Colourblind you are transported to an era of nostalgia. The 80s comeback can definitely be identified on this track: t gated reverb on the drums mixed with room reverb; the synth backing working with the “clean” guitar tone; the foundational bassline which guides the groove and harmony on route notes which gives room for the moody synth and guitar parts which are panned so well and give your ears lots of cool things to find in the mix.The vocals on this track are perfect. Tonally, they sit really well against everything, the key is perfectly placed for the singer's voice which allows for great projection and performance. Great mix, great performances, great song.

Colourblind tells a story of a relationship that seemingly only one person wants. The narrative explores the feeling of reaching out to a partner, only to have them hold back. It's a feeling that will resonate with many and is creatively encapsulated in the chorus, with the lyrics: “I must be colourblind, because all your red flags look like green lights.” Here the rest of the band builds to the largest dynamic of the song. Punchy chords from the guitars, synth pads, vocal harmonies on lyrics as well as the vocal line from the intro being reprised in the chorus. It’s catchy and beautiful.

Despite this climax, the track feels short and repetitive. The chord progression in the verse and chorus are the same, with other elements added and subtracted to give a sense of depth. For example, removing harmony for the first beat of a bar between sections or the way the drums cut out towards the end, or how the picked guitar lines change to hard hitting chords in the chorus. A device that’s well used nonetheless, there could be more exploration with differentiation in the chorus to give it a much bigger release of energy.

Overall though, the track is accessible and easy to enjoy, so be sure to check out daydreamers’ latest single ‘Colourblind’ now!
